Stani Restaurant, Athens

Updated: 10 hours ago

Renowned for its delicious yoghurt, Stani is a bit of an institution in Athens. Located on Marikas Kotopouli in the Omonoia region of the city, Stani opened its doors in 1931 and provides a delicious breakfast, dessert and coffee menu including their exquisite sheep and goat yoghurt. It should be noted that this is classed as a dairy bar and is in fact one of the last remaining traditional dairy spots in the city of Athens. As such, it is popular with both locals and tourists.

With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, Stani is the perfect place to stop for a coffee and breakfast. We visited in November with the weather being warm enough to allow us to sit outside. I am not a great lover generally of yoghurt so opted for some bread and eggs which comes with a coffee (my latte was extra) and an orange juice. Priced at around 11 euros including the latte it is a pretty decent breakfast. Other options include spinach and feta pies, their traditional filo pastry and cream pie (bougatsa), cakes or croissants. There is a glass case inside the bakery/dairy where you can view their freshly made pies and bakes and where you can also purchase yoghurt and honey to take away.

With a dairy intolerant G in tow, it is always difficult to find somewhere that can accommodate her requirement for alternative milks, however at Stani, with the yoghurt being made from sheep and goats milk, the yoghurt was welcomed with open arms and without any stomach pain ! Drizzled (well slathered really) in delicious honey and sprinkled with nuts, their famous yoghurt comes to you piled onto a small plate. Served in G's case with a Freddo Espresso, she was one happy young lady.

As you would expect from such a traditional establishment, the service was excellent, the staff friendly and engaging and the food delicious.

This is somewhere we will definitely visit each time we are in Athens. Please do check it out and let me know what you think.
