Greek Stories Restaurant, Kalamaki

We have been travelling to Zakynthos as a family since around 2004, with one of G’s earliest memories being of holidaying in the family focused resort of Kalamaki. We used to stay at the Amaryllis Hotel when she was small, booked through Thomas Cook it offered free child places, had a great food and drinks bar, nice pool area with a play area for the kids and a small shop. It has changed hands now and looks like its had a bit of a refresh but it is close to the beach road so it was a great base for a day at the beach - and we always ate at the beach taverna (Belizes Beach Taverna run by the fabulous Takis) and at night, we hit the strip !

With an abundance of restaurants, Kalamaki strip will not leave you disappointed. There are a vast array of restaurants to chose from covering numerous cuisines, but of course, the main focus is the fabulous Greek food.

Greek Stories, Kalamaki

I have to say that Greek Stories was not around when we first came to Zakynthos; it was established in the early 2020s and is a family run restaurant specialising in traditional Greek dishes. With a very simplistic decor of blue and white cloth covered tables and wooden chairs, with a boat / beach theme, it's simplicity and ease on the eye just draws you in, plus the food smells amazing. Your host will make sure you are welcomed and will explain the menu to you. Having been here on previous visits, we knew what we wanted for dessert before we had even looked at the menu!

Their orange cake is legendary with one of the owners' sons assuring me on one of our previous visits that it was made to his grandmothers' special family recipe!

On this occasion we opted for fried feta (saganaki) to start with their home made tzatziki, pita and some olives before diving into a huge plate of lamb chops, grilled to perfection. G opted for pasticcio which is a lasagna type dish but with tubes of slightly thicker spaghetti topped with a meat and tomato sauce flavoured with oregano and cinnamon and smothered with a bechamel cheesey sauce before being blasted under a hot grill so that the top is toasted and bubbling. We finished, of course, with the orange cake, served warm with ice cream - absolutely to die for !

Price wise, they are competitive compared to any other traditional restaurant you will find along the strip with main dishes coming in between 15-20 euros. I'd estimate spending around 60-70 euros for a meal for 2 - perhaps a couple of starters, a main course, some orange cake (of course) and a soft drink. Obviously adding a glass of wine or a beer will increase your costs, but if you do prefer wine with your dinner, your host can recommend something that will perfectly complement your meal.

We have eaten here previously, coming for dinner during our stay on the island in 2022 (after an aborted mission to visit Zakynthos in 2021 due to Covid) and again in both 2023, 2024 and during the summer of 2025 (yes we do tend to visit the island most years!). On each occasion we've found the food to be fresh and tasty, with their lamb dishes being the best I have honestly ever tasted.

So what makes Greek Stories stand out amongst the hustle and bustle of the Kalamaki strip? I think the fact they are not waving and shouting at you from across the street, trying to get your attention and lure you in is a huge bonus. Nothing puts me off more than someone screeching at me from across the road! Here there is a quiet serenity and simplicity about the restaurant where the friendly host and the delicious food does all of the talking.

Anyway, wherever you do decide to eat in Kalamaki, do give Greek Stories a try and let me know what you think !

Happy Travelling
