G and I visited the island of Zakynthos in October, staying at The Macedonian Hotel for a total of 14 nights. The hotel is located at the top end of the road which leads down to the beach in the resort of Kalamaki. The hotel is around a 15-20 minute drive from the airport and is rated as a 2 star accommodation. Despite the low star rating, it is a perfectly clean and basic hotel, and an ideal base.
It is a budget friendly hotel with rooms containing twin beds, a small wardrobe, dressing table and stool, a small table and two chairs and a small kitchen area. You also have your own bathroom with toilet, hand basin and shower. You are provided with crockery, cutlery, glasses, a kettle, toaster, 2 ring hob and a fridge with a small freezer compartment. Each room also has a balcony with a table and two chairs.
We had hired a car on this particular visit and managed to drive to the Lidl in Zante Town to stock up on breakfast items, water, soft drinks etc. There are also a couple of supermarkets out on the main Kalamaki strip if you decide not to hire a car. It is worth noting that there is a taxi rank a little further up the beach road. Alternatively, you can ask at reception and one can be called for you. A taxi into Zante Town will cost around 15euros (nearer 20euros in peak summer).
The hotel has a bar area which serves drinks and snacks and has a nice restaurant attached. There is also a pool area with sun beds together with a kids pool. In addition, there is also car parking available to the side of the hotel.
The Macedonia is competitively priced being much cheaper than many of the other hotels found along the beach road. I would definitely recommend The Macedonia if you are on a budget, it is an ideal base for your beach holiday in Kalamaki.
It is also worth noting that there is a fair amount of aircraft noise, with planes flying low over all of the hotels along the beach road as they come in to land. As the beach is a protected area, flights do not follow this path at night, however there are numerous flights during the day. Personally I think it is something of a novelty to watch the planes flying over the beach and thundering over the hotels. There is even an Airport Cafe at the very top of the beach road that has an elevated area for plane enthusiasts!
So wherever you decide to stay in Kalamaki, enjoy !
See you on the island soon !
