Betty’s afternoon tea

ree

So G and I visited York in December,  to visit the Christmas market and of course, when in York, you just HAVE to visit Betty’s. An institution since 1919, Betty’s Tea Room is a quintessentially British tea room offering a high end tea experience upstairs together with a more relaxed tea experience in the downstairs tea room.

The upstairs tea room (The Belmont Room) will set you back around £45 per head for afternoon tea with the usual sandwiches, scones and small cakes. There is a tea menu for you to choose from (you can of course have coffee if you prefer) and for an additional price you can add some bubbles or perhaps mulled wine.  For The Belmont Room you will need to book in advance via their website.

The downstairs tea room experience is just as nice, however you cannot book and will need to queue outside - we only waited around 30 minutes to be seated and were handed a menu to peruse whilst we waited, however it was early December and it was cold!  Bear this in mind and wrap up warm!  I would imagine that during the peak summer months you may have a much longer wait.

Once inside the cosy tea room we were shown to a corner table.  We decided to go for the normal afternoon tea which consisted of sandwiches, scones with cream and jam and small cakes, including the Betty’s signature chocolate cake.  I had Betty’s breakfast tea and G went for the Christmas tea.  She also had a glass of warm and spicy mulled wine.

The total price was around £70 and I have to say I did enjoy it.  There were plenty of people in the tea room downstairs area just taking coffee and a cake or choosing from their normal lunch menu and the food did look really good.  Menu prices were what I would consider to be fairly normal.

Our server was attentive but did not rush us at all.  We stayed for around 90 minutes before heading across the hallway and into the wonderland that is Betty’s shop - merchandise (xmas tree decorations), cakes, teas and more, it really is an Aladdin’s cave of goodies !  We left with a fruited loaf, a box of breakfast tea teabags and a Christmas tree decoration (we actually have a ‘travel’ Christmas tree at home that showcases all the places in the world we have visited and Betty’s is up there with our Fortnum and Mason tree decoration and our Harrods bauble!)

So, would I do this again?  I would say probably yes but maybe we will travel across to Harrogate next time.

So, whatever you decide to eat at Betty’s, I am sure you will receive a warm welcome and leave with a full belly !

See you soon
